Shivian Balaris: The 'Charming' SOPA / PIPA Supporter, Cat Yronwode
Below are a grouping of quotes from Cat Yronwode, owner-operator of Lucky Mojo Curio Co.’s personal Facebook page. Cat is such an avid supporter (yes, supporter) of SOPA / PIPA, that she proposes the government allow her to kill pirates (no, I’m not kidding).
Read below, then choose whether you ever wish to continue to support Lucky Mojo Curio Co. again.
I know I won’t.
“…I want my government to pass laws to put an end to the rip offs. ANY laws. ALL laws. MORE laws. The more fucking draconian the laws against internet piracy the better”
“[book pirates] should be put on a federal registry of book pirates, like sexual molestors [sic] are, so that i will KNOW THEM FOREVER and will be able to refuse to sell them my books.”
“If you don;t [sic] ‘get it’ [if you don’t understand why she supports SOPA / PIPA] then you are an enabler of theft.”
“To those who propose a ‘middle ground’ — FUCK THAT.”
“If stopping internet piracy means that the government gives me the right to carry a shot gun and shoot the pirating mother fuckers in the face, i will DO IT!”
“If someone broke into my home to steal my collection of tea cups, i would have the right to shoot them in the face. I feel the same way about people who steal my intellectual property. They are irredeemable criminals and the only sure way to eliminate them from society is to kill them.”
Wow… That’s remarkably vitriolic. It’s unbalanced and hateful. It seems strange for someone to be that angry about piracy when she writes thousands and thousands of pages of information on her site, a great deal of it compilations what she’s found ELSEWHERE online going back to the ICQ days.
I do believe I’m done supporting her and her company. And I say that as someone who has had her copyrighted writing and artwork stolen and passed off as other people’s work and STILL is outraged at the PIPA and SOPA censorship bills that the government has been considering. Yeah, authors who sell small numbers of their books and don’t get much back in royalties have every right to be angry about pirates giving their work away. I would be. Finding a way to cut back on that shouldn’t start with implementing censorship measures from two of the most restrictive governments in the world.
